Lorenzo Sonego and Ugo Humbert will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers and for the second time this spring when they meet again in round two of the French Open on Wednesday afternoon.
They just faced each other on the clay courts of Monte-Carlo last month and Sonego got the job done 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Their only other encounter came two years ago at the Montreal Masters, where Humbert cruised 6-3, 6-4.
Given the Frenchman’s mostly lackluster form over the past couple of seasons, the Monte-Carlo meeting should be more telling. Humbert is actually ranked high at the moment (40th to 48th) due to success on the Challenger circuit, but he is just 8-9 in the main tour in 2023 and his game is not at all conducive to clay courts. Over his entire career across all levels, Humbert has won almost 100 more matches than he has lost–but he has a losing record on dirt (43-44). Prior to beating Adrian Mannarino in round one, the 24-year-old had never won a match at Roland Garros in either the main draw or qualifying.
Right now Sonego is the better player overall and especially on clay.
Pick: Sonego in 5
