French Open draw revealed

The French Open draw ceremony took place on Friday afternoon in Paris and for the third consecutive year, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are in the same half of the bracket. It is the fifth straight time when mathematically possible (not the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds) that Nadal and Djokovic have landed on the same side.

Djokovic’s bottom quarter is especially difficult, as it also includes Madrid and Barcelona runner-up Dominic Thiem in addition to 2016 French Open quarterfinalist David Goffin. Thiem and Goffin are on a collision course for the fourth round, with the winner possibly to face Djokovic in the last eight.

Nadal, on the other hand, has a seemingly simple route to the semis. The nine-time Roland Garros champion could eventually meet Jack Sock in round four and either Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov, or Pablo Carreno Busta in the quarters.

A wide open top half is home to 2016 runner-up Andy Murray and 2015 winner Stan Wawrinka. Both men have been struggling, so the door could be open for contenders such as recent Rome champion Alexander Zverev and–if healthy–Juan Martin Del Potro. Zverev must deal with an especially tough early-round draw that includes Fernando Verdasco right off the bat and likely Pablo Cuevas in the third round.

      • Ah. 5th for RG draws (9th straight overall for any tournament they’ve both entered). You should have qualified like you did on twitter. Don’t you? Or do you.

this is fifth straight time that Nadal and Djokovic, when they haven’t been the 1 and 2 seeds, have been in the same half of the RG draw.

  1. I wanna see Muller Stan Kyrgios Rafa and the Americans do well. Muller will likely go out third round. Kyrgios is absolutely fucked. Stan is either losing to a qualifier first round or winning the whole thing. Rafa will probably win. Isner has a great draw and realistically could make the quarters but will probably come up with clutch play at the slams as always against Berdych and get triple bageled. Escobedo and Tiafoe actually have legitimate chances at round three runs. Also Sock/Harrison will make third round (probably Sock) and have a toughie against Mr. VAMOS then a much easier fourth round match with Rafa. There’s my slightly sarcastic brief take on the draw. Less sarcastic thoughts on it will be coming.

  2. Also joining Kyrgios in the “getting fucked by the draw business” is Murray. And that is a reference to a movie by the way if anyone knows which one I’m talking about.

  3. Tiggy gets it:

“What may make Djokovic happiest is seeing who he’s scheduled to face in the quarterfinals: Thiem. The Austrian is one of the contenders to win the tournament, but to do it he’ll probably have to avoid the Serb. Djokovic has dropped just one set in their five matches. In other words, this is the last quarter of the draw that Thiem wanted to find himself in.”

    • Of course Kavita. Most thinly veiled fedfawns like you would agree. Just don’t mistake feeling with wishful thinking. Don’t you? Or do you.
