Finals previews and predictions: Medvedev vs. Coric, Tsonga vs. Bedene

Daniil Medvedev is through to a fifth consecutive final and will bid for a second title during this incredible stretch when he faces Borna Coric on Sunday in St. Petersburg. The Metz winner’s trophy comes down to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Aljaz Bedene.

St. Petersburg Open: (1) Daniil Medvedev vs. (4) Borna Coric

Washington, D.C. Montreal. Cincinnati. The U.S. Open. St. Petersburg. Five tournaments, five finals for Medevedev. The fourth-ranked Russian has maintained his amazing form on the heels of his summer streak to a reach a fifth consecutive title match at the St. Petersburg Open. Medvedev, who triumphed in Cincinnati while finishing runner-up at the other aforementioned events, has advanced this week with straight-set victories over Evgeny Donskoy, Andrey Rublev, and Egor Gerasimov. The top seed has not even been pushed to a single tiebreaker.

Up next for Medvedev on Sunday is a sixth career contests against Coric, who leads the head-to-head series 4-1. Their only previous indoor hard-court encounter (aside from a less meaningful 2017 NextGen ATP Finals match) came last fall in Paris, where Coric got the job done 6-4, 6-4. The 15th-ranked Croat had been just 2-4 in his last six matches and was dealing with a back injury, but so far in St. Petersburg he has ousted Marton Fucsovics, Casper Ruud, and Joao Sousa all in three sets. A huge edge in current form goes to Mevedev, who will also benefit from home-court advantage. But he may have to seal the deal in straights, because Coric is a three-set master.

Pick: Medvedev in 2

Moselle Open: Aljaz Bedene vs. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Tsonga has won 17 career ATP titles; eight have come on indoor hard courts in France–including three in Metz. The 34-year-old Frenchman will now bid for another triumph at one of his favorite tournaments following trophy-lifting efforts in 2011, 2012, and 2015. He has also finished runner-up three times on indoor hard courts in his home country (including one in Metz). Tsonga is up to his usual tricks in these situations with victories this week at the expense of Pablo Andujar, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Nikoloz Basilashvili, and Lucas Pouille.

A second career meeting with Bedene awaits the world No. 61 on Sunday. Their only previous clash came six years ago at Roland Garros, where Tsonga dominated 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. Bedene gets another shot at his bigger-hitting opponent following Metz wins over Rayane Roumane, Gilles Simon, Pablo Carreno Busta, and Benoit Paire. But this is the toughest test yet for the 76th-ranked Slovenian, who will likely get overpowered in these conditions–much to the delight of the French crowd.

Pick: Tsonga in 2

  1. Amazingly, Medvedev is into another final, ie five finals in a row, uncommon when you’re not a member of the big three.

Hopefully he wins the title here, on home ground.
