Finals previews and predictions: Isner vs. Bublik, Jarry vs. Londero

Two all-seeded finals are taking place on Sunday, one on grass and one on clay. John Isner is going up against Alexander Bublik in Newport, while Nicolas Jarry and Juan Ignacio Londero are set to battle for the Bastad title.

Hall of Fame Tennis Championships: (1) John Isner vs. (7) Alexander Bublik

Isner’s favorite time of year is in progress, and he appears to be healthy for it after missing three months prior to Wimbledon with a stress fracture. An unbelievable eight of the 34-year-old American’s 14 career ATP titles have come in Newport (three) and Atlanta (five), where he will compete next week. Isner will first bid for another winner’s trophy in Newport on Sunday after surviving three-setters earlier in the week against Kamil Majchrzak, Matthew Ebden, and Ugo Humbert.

Bublik also took a scenic route to the final–the first of his career–with a quartet of three-set victories over Alex Bolt, Viktor Troicki, Tennys Sandgren, and Marcel Granollers. The 21-year-old Kazak, who has now earned more than half of his career ATP-level match wins (seven of 13) this season, will reach a career-high ranking of at least No. 71 on Monday. This may be a difficult matchup for Bublik, as his serve is a big one but not a reliable one. He has been broken seven times in the last two rounds and double-faulted 14 times against Granollers on Saturday. That would be a recipe for disaster with Isner on the other side of the net when holding serve is essential.

Swedish Open: (5) Nicolas Jarry vs. (6) Juan Ignacio Londero

Jarry and Londero be going head-to-head for the fourth time in their careers when they clash in the Bastad final on Sunday. Their only previous main-tour encounter came earlier this year on the red clay of Cordoba, where Londero benefited from home-court advantage and got the job done 6-2, 7-6(5). Jarry, however, won a pair of clay-court Challenger meetings in 2014 and 2017.

Londero is looking for his second ATP title, as he went on to triumph in Cordoba after beating Jarry in round two. The 71st-ranked Argentine made a fourth-round run at the French Open (lost to eventual champion Rafael Nadal) and has maintained his fine clay-court form with victories this week over Facundo Arguello, Hugo Dellien, Richard Gasquet, and Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Jarry is through to his third ATP final and third on clay thanks to defeats of Henri Laaksonen, Mikael Ymer, Jeremy Chardy, and Federico Delbonis. A slight surface edge goes to Londero and he will likely be feeling less pressure having already bagged one ATP title compared with Jarry’s 0-2 record in finals.

Pick: Londero in 3

  1. The problem I have is the Granollers and Sandgren form-lines are strong and suggest Bublik is as strong chance to win at least a set against an opponent that is still far from his guaranteed 2-zip form against lower ranked opponents.
