Ferrero won’t travel with Alcaraz to Australia due to knee surgery

Carlos Alcaraz will be without coach Juan Carlos Ferrero at the 2024 Australian Open. Ferrero recently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will be unable to make the trip to Melbourne.

Samuel Lopez, who has been coaching injured Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, will be Alcaraz’s coach for the first Grand Slam of the upcoming season.

Preparation for the Aussie Open is well underway for Alcaraz, who missed the tournament in 2023 because of a hamstring issue. The world No. 2 recently trained with good friend and rival Jannik Sinner at the Ferrero Tennis Academy in Alicante, Spain.

Alcaraz has played at Melbourne Park only twice, losing to Mikael Ymer in round two as a qualifier in 2021 before falling to Matteo Berrettini in round three of the 2022 edition. The 20-year-old is obviously a top title contender this time around and heads into the event as a two-time major champion, having triumphed at the U.S. Open in 2022 and at Wimbledon in 2023.

Sinner advanced to his first slam semifinal this past summer at the All-England Club, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. The 22-year-old Italian projects to be a top-four seed at the 2024 Australian Open after wrapping up his 2023 campaign in incredible form–highlighted by a Davis Cup title for Italy and a runner-up showing at the Nitto ATP Finals.

Both Alcaraz and Sinner will begin their 2024 seasons in Melbourne. They are not signed up for preceding tournaments in Brisbane, Hong Kong, Adelaide, or Auckland.
