Federer parts ways with Edberg, brings on Ljubicic

Stefan Edberg is out. Ivan Ljubicic is in.

Roger Federer announced on Tuesday that he has made a change to his coaching team, with Edberg exiting and Ljubicic hopping on board.

“After 2 very successful years, I would like to thank Stefan Edberg, my childhood idol, for agreeing to join my team,” Federer posted on Facebook. “It was a dream come true. Although it was supposed to only be for 2014, Stefan was great and agreed to extend the partnership through this year which I really appreciated. He taught me so much and his influence on my game will remain. He will always be a part of my team.

“Severin Luthi, who I have been working with since 2008, will continue to be my main coach and he will be joined by Ivan Ljubicic. Both Daniel Troxler, my physiotherapist and Pierre Paganini, my longtime fitness trainer, will remain part of my technical team.”

Ljubicic previously worked with Milos Raonic for two full seasons and part of another. Raonic made it to the World Tour Finals in 2014 before a foot injury plagued him this year. The Canadian announced late last month that he and Ljubicic were parting ways.

Federer defeats Ljubicic 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the 2006 Miami final:

  1. I think Ljubicic doesn’t like Rafa and has made bad remarks. Maybe Federer hopes Ljubicic will help him build sufficient contempt for Rafa to overcome the awe and fear in his mind.

    • 13-3? That’s not that bad of a record against Federer.

Also THREE of Ljubicic’s 13 losses to Federer came in final-set tiebreakers and another was 7-6, 7-6, 7-6. Ljubicic did very well for himself against Federer.

And even if he hadn’t, how someone fared against someone else H2H is absolutely irrelevant to how well or poorly they can coach that player.

      • I agree about about H2H not making any difference when it comes to choosing someone as a player’s coach. Fed knows what he needs and obviously felt that Ljuby could help him in some way.

  2. Ljubicic has multiple wins against every one of the Big Four – not many players have done that.

He improved Raonic’s ground game big time getting him to No. 4 in the world before injuries dragged him down again.

Great hire by Federer but tampering is naughty.

  3. Not many have such an impressive record as Ivan against the Big Four.

Good trivia question: What other players have multiple wins over each of the Big Four?

Joe, Stan and Tom are the only active players I can think of.

Andy and Nick are the only other inactive player that come to mind.

    John does as well.

It’s a pretty exclusive club of seven!

Can anyone think of any more?

Jo, Stan, Tomas are the only active players I can think of.

Andy from US and Nick the Russian are the only other inactive player that come to mind.

    Del Potro does as well.

  5. To me it makes no differrence to Fed, he’s not going to beat Novak at the slams or Rafa at the FO anyway. Perhaps he wants a bigger serve like Ljuby’s.

These days, even Stan can beat him at a slam and threatens him on any court except on grass, even though Murray may no longer threaten him.

“I cannot understand how can someone who Federer repeatedly spanked help him?”

It’s like Rafa hiring Fed as his coach.
