Federer gets arthroscopic surgery, out until grass-court swing

Roger Federer will not play again until the grass-court swing.

Federer announced on Thursday that he has undergone arthroscopic knee surgery and will therefore skip Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami plus the entire clay-court swing.

“My right knee has been bothering me for a little while,” the 38-year-old Swiss posted on social media. “I hoped it would go away, but after an examination, and discussion with my team, I decided to have arthroscopic surgery in Switzerland yesterday [Wednesday].

“After the procedure, the doctors confirmed that it was the right thing to have done and are very confident of a full recovery. As a result, I will unfortunately have to miss Dubai, Indian Wells, Bogota, Miami and the French Open.

“I am grateful for everyone’s support. I can’t wait to be back playing soon, see you on the grass!”

Missing clay-court tournaments in the spring is nothing new for Federer, so there would be no reason to expect him to play on the slow stuff if he isn’t completely 100 percent. The decision is likely a precautionary one, and the 20-time Grand Slam champion should be good to go for the Noventi Open in Halle and Wimbledon–both, of course, on his grass-court stomping grounds.

  1. Was shocked to read this when I woke up today. Hope he recovers well. Always a big hole in the tour when one of the Big 3 goes missing.

    • I just came on here to read the news about Fed. Sorry to hear about it. I hope that Fed has a speedy recovery.

Get well soon, Fed! Tennis needs it’s big 3!
      👍

  2. Yeah!…Very sorry to hear about Rog..i’m going to miss see him play that’s for sure!…

Hope he will recover well for Wimby!…

    • There are some passionate Fed fans here who also love Rafa Alison. That’s true of Kevin and Benny and there are also fed fans such as Eugene who are very respectful towards Rafa and want him fit and playing…
This site is pretty healthy in that respect.
I like all 3 of the big 3 and any one of them out injured is a big loss to tennis…

      • That’s true Amy. And Joe Smith. You may not agree with him every time. But from all his postings, you’d never come to the conclusion he would wish Rafa anything less than to be healthy.

  3. I somehow felt he’s not gonna play RG. Also, felt like last year SF was his last RG ever. But didn’t expect him to skip IW and Miami. This is the beginning of end for his career. Just have to enjoy watching him play for a few more slams and that’s it. Would be amazing to win the Wimbledon. But at the same time, I accept the chances are not great.
I still find it hard to accept that Djoko won most of his close Slam finals.
2 consecutive match points saved at USO and Wimbledon. Those 2 will bring him very close to Nadal and Fed.

      • Thanks Amy. Yes, never discount any of the big 3. You are right.
If you ask me now what would I choose: the Olympic gold and 20 slams or 21 Slams without the Olympic Gold, I wouldn’t know what to answer. At least not straightforward. He might have left one more shot…

    • To be fair.. federer was won quite a few close ones.. his 2007 victory over rafa was a close one since rafa had multiple break chances in the fifth set.. his 2009 victory over roddick was another close one.. then his 2017 ao victory again a close one. So it just balances out over the career

      • Yes vmk1. It’s less painful if I see it this way. Roddick came very close. So did Rafa. Basically Fed played amazingly well against them in the most crucial points.
I can’t believe it he still manages to play GS semifinals and when not fit enough or on his least favourite surface.

  4. Amy true hun yes on this site anyway, wont mention other certain ones though lol, i have never understood such vitriolic comments regarding favourites rivals when i comes to some posters, only a game when alls said and done ….

  5. Childish remarks about Federer and his fans. He’s 39 .

Physicality and its related injury problems/excuses were never anywhere near as big a factor for him compared to other top players.
