A less-than-surprising AEGON Championships final will be taking place on Sunday after Andy Murray and Milos Raonic won their respective semifinal matches on Saturday afternoon. Murray held off Marin Cilic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 before Raonic overwhelmed Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-4.
The top-seeded Scot won all 17 of his first-serve points in the third set and he clinched victory with his 14th ace.
“You’re not going to repeat that every single time, but (I’ll) try to understand why exactly it was so good,” Murray said of his serving throughout the decider. “The third sets today and in the match with Kyle (Edmund) were a very high level from my side of the court, and that’s very pleasing because I know my best tennis is in there. Obviously just have to try to get the consistency there, which comes with matches and time on the court.”

A much more unexpected title match is in the cards at the Gerry Weber Open. Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem appeared to be on a collision course, but fellow Germans Alexander Zverev and Florian Mayer had other ideas. Zverev upset Roger Federer 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3 and Mayer halted Thiem’s hot streak with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Bummed out about Fed but still happy for the two Germans. Should be a good final. Raonic and Murray has potential to be epic too especially if Murray is at peak on return and Raonic is at peak on serve. One other thing that I’m happy about regarding Queen’s was the good play from Cilic. After the loss to Stepanek in Stuttgart, he bounced back well. Wins over Lopez Johnson and Tipsarevic then a semifinal in which he really made Murray work hard and play his best match of the week. Hopefully Marin can do some damage at Wimby. He’s capable of course but he’s also capable of some of the opposite (aka losing to frickin Trungelliti).
It was great to see the replay of Zverev/Fed. Zverev really kept it together and served it out brilliantly. I also appreciated his muted celebration in respect for Fed.
It’s really something to see these young kids getting victories like this,
