Djokovic takes wild card into stacked Geneva tournament

ATP 250s occupying the weeks before a Grand Slam generally feature underwhelming fields, as most players are already making their way to the next destination.

The 2024 Gonet Geneva Open is an exception to the rule.

Boasting a field that already featured a whole host of top players, Geneva tournament organizers announced on Friday that Novak Djokovic has accepted a wild card. With the French Open beginning in a little more than a week, Djokovic is looking for match practice after losing early at the Rome Masters (to eventual semifinalist Alejandro Tabilo in the third round). The top-ranked Serb has played only 17 matches this entire season and has not reached the final at any of five tournaments (four without including the United Cup).

Djokovic joins a draw that also includes Casper Ruud, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Andy Murray, and Denis Shapovalov.

The 37-year-old will be making his debut appearance in Geneva, an event that was founded in 1980 and went on a 24-year hiatus between 1991 and 2015. Ruud captured the title in both 2021 and 2022 before losing to eventual champion Nicolas Jarry in last season’s quarterfinals.
