Djokovic cruises past Dimitrov to reach Miami Open final

Novak Djokovic rolled into the Miami Open final by defeating Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-3 on Friday afternoon. Djokovic got broken in the first game of the match but did not drop serve again as he cruised in one hour and 10 minutes.

With Djokovic 37 years old and Dimitrov 33, it was the oldest combined age for a Masters 1000 semifinal in tennis history. The Serb was already the oldest Masters 1000 semifinalist ever; now, of course, he is the oldest finalist.

Djokovic awaits either Taylor Fritz or Jakub Mensik on Sunday, when he will bid for his 100th ATP title. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has been stuck on 99 since capturing Olympic gold last summer in Paris.

“After the Olympics, which was my 99th title, I knew that every tournament I play I am going for 100,” Djokovic commented. “I wasn’t able to achieve that–until hopefully Sunday. I am going to go all in. I haven’t dropped a set. I’m playing really good tennis–as good as I’ve played in a long time.”

Dimitrov, ranked No. 15, was defending runner-up points from last year (lost to Jannik Sinner in the Miami final). The Bulgarian will fall to 18th on Monday.

  1. I can’t wait for his retirement. We would have no reason to watch the sport anymore. Kyrgios could easily win a slam if he got back in to shape.
