Dimitrov overcomes wardrobe malfunction to advance at Australian Open

Most wardrobe malfunctions involve clothes coming off.

The problem with Grigor Dimitrov’s wardrobe–as any women in attendance would especially agree–was that it stayed on.

Dimitrov sported what can only be considered a disastrous warmup outfit when he arrived at Melbourne Arena for his first-round Australian Open match against Juan Ignacio Londero on Monday afternoon. To be more specific, it was a dark purple tracksuit with various yellow shapes littered throughout.

“I have [no] problem wearing anything, pretty much,” Dimitrov explained. “I actually love it. I love colors…. I love experimenting as well and when [I’m] out there, I don’t really think that much of the outfit. But it’s so good to feel comfortable. I’ve been fortunate with Nike to be able to have quite a bit of my input…. I love being different when it comes to things like that and so many other things. I think the outfit is fun. I don’t want to be vanilla.”

In that effort, the Bulgarian succeeded greatly. As did his current coach Andre Agassi back in the early stages of his playing days.

“Andre was very happy with it,” Dimitrov assured. “He was impressed. He was like, ‘Wow, I know where that comes from!'”

The world No. 18 clearly didn’t warm up well in the tracksuit and started slow against Londero before recovering for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4 victory. Dimitrov awaits either Tommy Paul or Leonardo Mayer in round two, and a showdown with Paul could result in dueling tracksuits because Paul is a fellow Nike client and also not one to shy away from clothing shenanigans.

Please, no!

  1. Very scary outfit, but he played well and his post match interview was gracious and upbeat….have heard he’s a very nice guy, despite fashion misstep 🦘

  2. In what way was the suit malfunctioning?? It’s purpose clearly seems to be to confuse and intimidate the opponent before the match even starts. Dimi won. Therefore everything seems to have worked just fine😉😉😉

  3. Dimi’s tracksuit is rather awful, but the Nike men’s shorts this year are even worse. Thankfully Tiafoe lost so we won’t have to see him in them again, but Kyrgios is still out there. I’m just thankful Rafa doesn’t have to wear them – pink isn’t my favorite color on Rafa but I’m really glad he doesn’t have to wear Nike’s other dreadful designs!

    • Not for me. I like the players to wear different outfits – just not as different as the Nike madness in Oz. Not fond of the Hydrogen skull outfits either. At least Uniqlo has a somewhat better kit for Fed this year, although their red emblem kind of clashes with the purple. At least he doesn’t look like he moonlights as a deliveryman now.
