Tennis players, analysts, and coaches along with some other celebrities took to Twitter in response to Dustin Brown’s Wimbledon upset of Rafael Nadal on Thursday.

    • Uh oh, you said it was an embarrassingly awful performance by Nadal. Aren’t you concerned about being attacked for not being a true blue Rafa fan here? 🙂

  1. Even worse was the way Brown fed off the crowd support. I believe it was more of a case of cheering for the underdog than wanting to see Rafa defeated. I’m sure they weren’t expecting to see him fold the way he did.

  2. “This is what life is all about”…so life is all about beating Nadal…poor creatures…and Brown will certainly end up losing heavily from Victor….this is pathetic…if I were in the competitive mode I would look beyond the win over sub-par Nadal…

The world reacts to Rafa ‘s defeat not to Brown’s amazing victory…that is all that matters to the people: seeing Rafa lose yet again…can Rafa raise from the dust…I don’t know…but these sorts of losses just tend to erase everything Rafa has done in and for tennis…how can people forget?…and it’s not fair to Rafa…it’s like killing an injured animal…Rafa should grow stronger from this and never look back…

“It’s one of those things that people say, you can’t move on until you let go of the past. Letting go is the easy part, it’s the moving on that’s painful. So sometimes we fight it, try and keep things the same. Things can’t stay the same though. At some point, you just have to let go. Move on. Because no matter how painful it is, it’s the only way we grow”…

  4. All this hype about a guy who is going to lose his next match the same as Kyrgios, Darcis and Rosol did before him after Rafa beat himself.

They just happened to be there.

  5. And there u have it, Brown loses toTroiki as expected!! There is nothing more upsetting than Rafa getting beaten like that and the player not being able to back it up!!! This is just beyond annoying, and to think that Rafa beat troiki only three weeks ago!!!! Rafa, just simply lost for words!!!!!!

  6. Well we all knew this was coming. It’s not easy to beat Rafa anywhere. So these guys have one day where they can come out and play lights out and then do nothing. What have any of the other guys who have beaten Rafa in the early rounds done so far in this sport?

It’s unfortunate, but I also believe that Rafa changed the dynamic in the match when he won the second set and then had a chance to break Brown early in the third set. But then his missed a forehand and there went his confidence.

I will say this again. This is a match that Rafa could have won. Even he knows it. All you had to do was see the look in his eyes. He had turned the tide in the match, but couldn’t get the job done.

We have always known that it takes a lot to beat Rafa anywhere, anytime. But I also remind people here that Rafa faced just this type of challenge in the 2010 Wimbledon and fought back to come from behind in back-to-back matches against Haase and Petz to get the wins. So he can do it. What else have these guys ever done except play the match of their lives against Rafa back then? But Rafa had the answers and ended up winning Wimbledon.

  7. Have you ever had the experience of feeling like the proverbial ‘deer caught in the headlights’?

This ‘you’ by the way is for anyone reading this, no one in particular. (if you are going to read this longish post :-).

It’s a natural response sometimes. Your mind/brain/body is responding to stress to the point where the stress chemicals in your body are ruling for the moment. Quality thinking is not possible, etc, etc, all the well-known physiological responses that animals and humans have that evolved brilliantly over many millions of years to give you a fighting chance to survive in a life-or-death situation. It helps the deer either fight (won’t usually against their predators except perhaps if they are between them and their young ones), or flee (run for your life), or freeze (trying this tactic that works under certain circumstances with certain threats to life).

You do know where I’m going with this, no?

Think of the now, alas, many times when we’ve seen Rafa being relatively passive and somewhat paralyzed on court, at least relative to his usual strength, and on-court thinking and adjusting. People can say any number of things about fitness, other tennis players evolving or playing lights-out, court conditions and so on… and there will be truth to all of these. But it will _not_ help you understand this, alas, uncharacteristic behaviour of Rafa on court some times. (Remember the mid to late 2000’s, when Rafa had a hard time on hardcourts against most players… he fought and fought despite some of his _then_ limitations on the surface and as a result won or lost doing his best.) The one thing that you need to also digest and simply understand, perhaps the main thing, is that what ails Rafa in addition to the other challenges it the anxiety-based response that is now so clear to see, alas, quite often. If this _one factor_ was not there… the rest would be a challenge surmountable with practice, winning matches, adding the new ideas and confidence from an additional coach in the person of a former champion. But until you also consider this anxiety side of rafa’s condition you will keep seeing the situation in an unrealistic way. This last season or actually two will continue to not really make sense.
