Ugo Humbert and Alex Michelsen will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they collide in round one of the Brisbane International on Tuesday. It’s an intriguing matchup, especially with both players coming off stellar 2023 campaigns.

Humbert soared to a career-high ranking of No. 20 in the world, where he currently stands. The left-hander from France was especially red hot at the end of last year, reaching the quarterfinals in Beijing and Shanghai, advancing to the semis in Basel, and triumphing in front of the home crowd in Metz.

Just 19 years old, Michelsen broke into the top 100 (high of 94th, currently 97th). The American played in four Challenger Tour finals (two titles), finished runner-up at the ATP 250 in Newport, and picked up his first Grand Slam match win at the U.S. Open.

Michelsen stands at 6’4”, wielding a big serve and all-around powerful game. He is dangerous any time he takes the court. Of course, Humbert has plenty of power and also brings to the table plenty of guile and experience. Brisbane’s No. 4 seed should be able to build on his impressive conclusion to 2023 and start 2024 in style.

Pick: Humbert in 2
