The 2017 ATP season has come and gone. Before we start taking a look ahead to 2018, it is time to reflect on the best matches this past year had to offer. Even though too many top players missed too much time due to injuries, the season was not without drama.
In terms of historical importance, nothing outdid the Australian Open final between Roger Federer Rafael Nadal.
In terms of quality, perhaps Federer vs. Nick Kyrgios in Miami takes the cake?
In terms of fifth-set drama, Nadal vs. Gilles Muller at Wimbledon has to be up there.
As for the highest-quality five-setter, that may have been Nadal vs. Grigor Dimitrov at the Aussie.
The biggest comeback was undoubtedly staged by Juan Martin Del Potro against Dominic Thiem at the U.S. Open.
One of the biggest upsets was Denis Shapovalov beating Nadal in Montreal. David Goffin also pulled off a stunner at Federer’s expense in London.
And even though bigger names had already fallen by the wayside, the season ended with a bang in the form of a thriller between Dimitrov and Goffin in the London final.

i’m going to compile an overall top 10 this week from a combination of both mine and from other sources. If you want your vote to be included, post your top 10 (or more) in order here. Thanks!
Three stand-outs:
1. Nadal-Dimitrov AO
2. Fed-Kyrgios Miami
3. Fed-Nadal, AO
The last is the most significant, but the other two were higher quality, imo.
agreed
Fed Nishikori at the AO is super underrated in my opinion. Just amazing shotmaking from both sides over five sets. All three Fed Berdych matches were great too, the demolition at the AO, then thriller in Miami and that Wimbledon semi was the best in terms of quality from both I think
1) Australian Open- R. Federer vs R. Nadal( 6-4,3-6,6-1,3-6,6-3).
This match was really tough and Roger Federer didn’t give up despite being down in the 5th set.
2) Acapulco- S. Querrey vs Rafa(6-3,7-6(3).
Sam was brilliant.
3) Indian wells- R. Federer vs R. Nadal( 6-2,6-3).
Roger smoked Rafa.
4) Miami- R. Federer vs R. Nadal(6-3,6-4).
Federer smoked him again.
5) Rome- A. Zverev vs N. Djokovic( 6-4,6-3).
I am a fan of both player’s but I was happy for Alexander, he was amazing in this tournament.
Novak is the better player but sometimes good players lose and he wasn’t in form.
6) French Open- R. Nadal vs S. Wawrinka( 6-2,6-3,6-1).
Rafa was crazy in this tournament, no one came close, no one.
Kudos to P. Carreno, they only sensible player in FO, he ran away in the 2nd set.
Honestly(fake) I think rafa was taking an illegal substance, he is a Bad boy 😎.
7) Wimbledon- G. Muller vs R. Nadal(6-3,6-4,3-6,4-6,7-6(4).
I loved this match especially the end.
Gilles should have won this match in straight sets but nadal fought hard.
Honestly(4 real) I saw this victory when the draw came out.
8) Montreal- D. Shapovalov vs R. Nadal(3-6,6-4,7-6(4).
Tough match but Shaporista was never intimidated.
I like that!
9) Montreal- A. Zverev vs R. Federer(6-3,6-4).
I predicted this final and I predicted the Victor, wooohooo!
Zverev was awesome here and Roger Federer made a mistake, it cost him Cincinnati and USO.
10) Shanghai- R. Federer vs R. Nadal(6-4,6-3).
Q- Who’s your daddy?😂🤣😁😅😄🤣😂.
I also liked-
Australian Open- D. Istomin vs N. Djokovic(7-6(8),2-7,2-6,7-6(5),6-4).
Wow! Denis played well in AO but he didn’t maintain that form, I hope he plays well next year.
Masters cup ATP(WTF)- D. Goffin vs R. Nadal(7-6(5),6(4)-7,6-4).
Goffin should have won WTF, he had the biggest victories and he should have solidified it with a trophy, he was also unlucky in Davis Cup.

Love u all!
( Luke 2:8-14, Matthew 1:21).
I made a mistake- G. Muller vs Rafa ended 15-13 not 7-6.

I also had Muller over Nadal
Nice.
G. Muller’s odd was really high.
Wow….very impressed by the tennis knowledge reflected in the above comments. As a Fed fan, I loved the Aussie Final, and as for drama, was the Pouile-Rafa 5 setter at the OPEN in 2017 …or ’16?
2016
i’m going to guess 2016…given that Nadal WON the entire U.S. Open in 2017!
Scoot Dimon,
Thanks!
1) Fedal AO
2) Nadal v Dimitrov AO
3) Nadal v Muller Wimby
4) Kyrgios v Fed Miami
5) Stan v Murray FO
6) Thiem v Dimitrov Madrid
7) Djokovic v Murray Doha
8) Murray v Kohlschreiber Dubai
9) Nadal v Shapovalov Montreal
10) Thiem v Schwartzman Montreal
(Probably forgot some but here’s my top ten off the top of my head)
You forget Fed vs Delpo USO, Shanghai, Basel; Fed vs Goffin WTF?
To me Delpo and Goffin vs Fed and getting their wins (esp Goffin for the first time) playing more aggressive tennis than Fed, made the matches well worth top ten positions.
😂😋🤣😁!
Where is your pointed white hood emoji?
Fed was not himself vs Del Po at US Open. But it was an exciting match so I guess you can throw that one in there as well.
Any slam final with the GOAT makes it one of the best for me so:
1) AO Final
2) FO Final
3) USO Final

When I think of best matches of the year, I choose only those where both players played at their best/ close to their best. So Nadal- Shapovalov, Federer- Delpotro (USO), Federer – Goffin are not in that list, because Fedal played mediocre tennis in those matches.
Except GS matches between Nadal- Dimitrov, Federer-Nadal, I think the best one was Federer- Kyrgios in Miami. They both played consistently well game after game.
Goffin vs Fed mediocre? Both were playing well and Goffin was exceptional!
Not the match. Federer’s level. He stepped in the court unprepared and shaky.
Yup. Agreed with Eugene (with the exception of AO final where Nadal wasn’t at his best – quite far from it IMO). Even Federer had patchy moments. 2009 AO final, Nadal played at a much higher level.
Yep AO 2009 both Fed and Rafa played at a higher level throughout; 2017 version no so much, probably Rafa was more tired after his grueling SF with one less day of rest compared to Fed, given that he’s 31, not 22 year old.
How can he be unprepared and shaky when he won the first set quite comfortably? It’s Goffin who upped the level in set two and three, and the match was close since.
More than one commentator called Fed-Kyygios the greatest three set match ever played. In terms of pure tennis quality it may have been even higher than Nadal-Dimitrov AO. Both were filled with incredible tennis.
Facts
Federer v Nadal AO final
Murray v Wawarinka FO semi
Federer v Delpo USO
Nadal v Dimitrov AO
Nadal v Muller W
