Sebastian Baez will head into the U.S. Open on a 10-match winning streak.
Baez, who was coming off a title on the red clay of Kitzbuhel, won the Winston-Salem Open on Sunday afternoon with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jiri Lehecka. The 42nd-ranked Argentine needed one hour and 34 minutes to triumph in the final and secure his fourth ATP title overall (third this season).
“I just kept going and tried to be focused on good things,” said Baez, who was down a break early in the first set and again in the second but stormed back on both occasions. “I’m happy for the result and for this whole week. It’s nice to have this confidence. Now I need to think about my recovery after this week. I have a few days and then will focus on New York.”
In the first round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday the 22-year-old will face Borna Coric, whom he defeated in the Winston-Salem semis on Friday. Lehecka is going up against Aslan Karatsev on Monday.
