Mitchell Frank d. (WC) Nathan Pasha 3-6, 6-2, 6-4: A battle between two college players–NCAA Tournament hero Frank of UVA and Georgia’s Pasha–went down to the wire on center court. After no breaks of serve throughout the third set, Frank broke at 5-4 for the match. He hit a winner off the net cord at 30-30 before a Pasha approach shot went off the net cord and sailed long at 30-40. Tough luck for the Bulldog!
(3) Somdev Devvarman d. Patrick Davidson 6-2, 6-0: This was never going to be a match, but Devvarman still turned in an impressive performance. Davidson settled his nerves in the second set and made the favorite work, which resulted in some entertaining rallies despite a scoreline that was obviously going to be lopsided right from the start.
(2) Tim Smyczek d. Luke Saville 6-1, 6-3: Smyczek played right on top of the baseline–as he likes to do–the whole time and took it to his opponent from start to finish. Both Smyczek and Devvarman look like they should qualify without too much trouble and perhaps even do damage in the main draw.
go Somdev……and Robbi G!
