American men went a perfect 3-0 at the Mutua Madrid Open on Monday, as John Isner, Sam Querrey, and Steve Johnson all reached the second round.
Isner, the No. 16 seed, blasted 13 aces to beat Adrian Mannarino 7-6(2), 6-4 and set up a meeting with Thomaz Bellucci. Querrey joined Isner in the last 32 by outlasting Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3. Johnson also went the distance, needing a third-set tiebreaker to survive Alejandro Gonzalez 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). Next up for Johnson is two-time defending champion Rafael Nadal.
A total of five American men are in the main draw of a clay-court Masters event for the first time since Rome in 2004. Donald Young and Jack Sock will contest their openers on Tuesday.
