Carlos Alcaraz’s ABN AMRO Open debut resulted in a title, as the Spaniard battled past Alex de Minaur 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the final on Sunday afternoon. De Minaur had dropped his serve only once in the entire tournament, but Alcaraz earned four breaks while triumphing in one hour and 54 minutes.
The 21-year-old recovered from a second-set hiccup by breaking at 3-2 and 5-2 in the decider. A netted forehand by De Minaur on Alcaraz’s second championship point brought an end to the proceedings.
It is Alcaraz’s 17th ATP title and his first indoors. He is also the first Spanish champion in Rotterdam.
“This week has been a really good week all together,” the world No. 3 said to his team during the trophy ceremony. “(We were) putting in really good work. Coming here [not] feeling 100 percent well with the cold, but after every day I’m feeling better and better. Rotterdam has been a really special week for me. I was going to say not only for the title…yeah for the title, as well…but for the support that I received here since the first day. It was the first time that I [played] here and [the fans] made it like I’ve been playing this tournament for a long time.”
At the Dallas Open, also an ATP 500 tournament, unseeded Denis Shapovalov won his third ATP title with a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over No. 2 seed Casper Ruud. It is Shapovalov’s first triumph above the 250-point level.
The 25-year-old Canadian beat all of the top three seeds in Dallas. He ousted No. 1 Taylor Fritz in the second round and No. 3 Tommy Paul in the semis.
nice one, Alcaraz
