Carlos Alcaraz looked scary good during a 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(5) destruction of Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals of the French Open on Tuesday night.
Showcasing forehands upwards of 115 mph from the back of the court, his usual steady diet of dropshots, borderline unbreakable serving, and impenetrable defense, Alcaraz had almost no trouble improving to 5-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against Tsitsipas. The 20-year-old Spaniard surprisingly failed to serve out the match at 5-3 in the third set, but he recovered in a tiebreaker to get across the finish line in style.
Alcaraz vs. Djokovic in the semifinals
The two-hour and 13-minute thrashing leaves Alcaraz well rested and sky high on confidence heading into Friday’s semifinal showdown against Novak Djokovic. Earlier on Tuesday the 36-year-old Serb had a tougher time with Karen Khachanov but recovered from a slow start to prevail 4-6, 7-6(0), 6-2, 6-4.
Alcaraz and Djokovic have faced each other only once before–at the Rome Masters last spring, also in the semis. Then just 19 years old, Alcaraz won 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(5) on his way to the title.
