Murray in Miami for offseason training

Andy Murray is ready to begin his annual offseason training in Miami, Florida. Murray flew over to the United States on Monday, while rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal wrapped up their years (not including Davis Cup for Djokovic) in the World Tour Finals title match.

The fourth-ranked Scot has been recovering from September back surgery, which sidelined him for the entire post-U.S. Open fall swing aside from a Davis Cup playoffs tie in which Great Britain booked its spot in the 2014 World Group by beating Croatia.

Murray began hitting balls–albeit far from full speed–last week. After mostly focusing on non-stress water activities, the Wimbledon champion will likely resume workouts in Miami with running, weights, and tennis practice.

He is expected to be ready for the Australian Open in January.

  1. expect Murray to make a strong comeback…I see him becoming a real threat to other players and committed to winning…no more obstacles health wise I hope…for a start he should do fine in AO although I don’t expect him to go deep as to reach the final…but I really believe Murray to win Dubai this year (time to change the title holder there 🙂

  2. About this time last year I remember posting a comment to the effect that Rafa’s enforced layoff could prove to be a blessing in disguise by giving him time to properly address the injuries which had plagued him for years instead of the make do and patch up approach which only ever lasted for a few months at a time.

Luckily Andy took note and realised he needed to do something drastic about his back.
Here’s hoping he is now restored to full health and will be able play without constant pain and to build on the success he enjoyed in 2012.

  3. I agree that Murray did the right thing in finally having the back surgery. It’s been plaguing him for a while now and more conservative treatment didn’t seem to work.

I think he is going to be back stronger than ever and will be able to build on the success he has had the last two years. But this time he can do without recurrent bouts of back pain.

  4. ^^^^There’s no way he is likely to ‘thrash’ Nole quite so soon after coming back unless Nole has crocked himself while winning the DC single-handed for Serbia.

    • I agree. I think we have to be realistic with Murray coming back after being off for some months. It’s true that he won’t have been gone as long as Rafa, but he also underwent back surgery. Even though it was minor and he seems to be recovering well, it does take some time to get the fitness and form back.

I would think we will just all enjoy seeing him play again. If he exceeds expectations, then good for him! 🙂
