I just saw the espn picks. 4 for Novax and 4 for Alcaraz. None for Rafa.
This mirrors the betting but although Tsitsi has an easy run to the final he is still behind Rafa.
I’m going with Novak, mainly because of his experience (compared to Alcaraz for example). And of course Rafa has fitness issues unfortunately.
This is still a Rafa site! 56 votes for Rafa, 34 for Djokovic, only 22 for Alcaraz.
Honestly, I won’t be surprised if any of those three win the title. I would be a bit surprised if Tsitsi manages to finally win a slam. But it’s quite possible that whoever emerges from the top half of the draw will be a shadow of himself. He’ll also be battle tested. I can guarantee that!
Rafa does not have “fitness issues”. He’s got a “tricky” left foot that acts up from time to time, plus he’ll turn 35 during the second week of the tournament.
Rafa will turn 36. Fitness issues is an absurd way of describing living with an injury that cannot be corrected. Insensitive to say the least.
Rafa also had a bad rib injury quite recently.
Rafa will surprise everyone and win the title. He is looking sharper than Rome in his practise matches and his foot is no longer bothering him. He will be hungry and out to prove a point and get a 2 grand slam lead over Djokovic and Federer and prove he is the GOAT!
He could tweak his foot injury very easily during a run of matches. That’s what worries me about him going all the way.
@ Anshuman, I love ure take!!! With Rafa”s “fitness” issues clearly it hampers his chances but it does not mean that he can’t win!! Like I said in another thread, more often than not, Rafa has given the proverbial middle finger to those who have written him off in slams, and at FO to boot!!! I am very happy that he is not the favorite here bcoz he can focus on his tennis instead of the pressure and expectations!! Despite the draw, this is the best thing that can happen to Rafa!!!
However, if he loses to Novak in the quarters or before at least it will give him enough time to prepare for Wimby and try to win there, a feat that will give me immense pleasure and satisfaction. And after that, whatever happens happens bcoz he would have cemented his legacy in my view!!! Stay healthy, Rafa. Vamos champ!!!

Honestly, predictions for this RG are more or less educated guesses since we don’t know how Rafa’s foot (and everything else) will behave. I don’t give Novax ant chance to beat Nadal if the latter is even close to his best – and why wouldn’t he if he stays healthy until then? The Serb only beat Rafa at RG by taking advantage of the Spaniard’s woes, the situation is no different today.
I think that Alcaraz, at least for now, has a game with too little margin for error. He hasn’t won anything important on RG-like clay. He might win this, but I really doubt that he will.
As long as Rafa’s healthy, he’s most likely going to win this. However, nobody knows how things will unfold. If he crashes out, the final winner depends on when that happens.

Rafa had it tougher when he started. Fed was beating everyone. Rafa was never intimidated by Fed. He was able to give Fed fits right from the start.

They are sidestepping the fact that Rafa went into Madrid unprepared because he was unable to train after his rib injury and that Djokovic was still at the stage when he was losing to everyone because of lack of matches. Not that Alcaraz is a walkover for either of them but they should put things into perspective.
Londero is a LL so he wasn’t really a test for Alcaraz. Granted Alcaraz is a great player but enough of the drooling.

I could not agree more! I said as much after Rafa lost to Alcaraz. Rafa said himself that Madrid was not the ideal tournament for his return from the rib injury. He said that it is the court least like RG. Novak was far from his best against Alcaraz.

I’m looking forward to a potential meeting of Zverev vs Alcaraz in a slam QF, let’s see what both could produce if they meet in the QF.

I think that his doctor’s assistance will consist mostly in stopping Nadal from abusing his foot during training.

Tsitsipas has no chance to win if he gets to the final. Actually I don’t think anyone from the bottom half of the draw can win.
Maybe someone has a chance if either Rafa or Novax get through if they have to play back to back 5 sets beforehand .
The obvious issue with Rafa is that his foot can just suddenly go.
If it’s Alcaraz then the exhaustion theory does not apply. At 19 he is not going to get fatigued. Let’s just say that the only way I see someone from the bottom half of the draw winning, is if either Rafa or Novak get through and it wears them out.
But we are getting way ahead of ourselves. If ever there was a time to take it one match at a time, this is it. Rafa has to go match by match and hope his foot holds up.
