Wait just a cotton pickin’ minute here. You’re picking greats of the game like Muller, Kyrgios, Stakhovsky, Rosol and Darcis to lose in the first round? Augusta will not be pleased.
I’m with filter at USO.
Anyone but fedal.

Well, well, the worm has certainly turned: @Hawkeye63 is now “friending” @filter.
I hope Baby Djokovic chooses this fortnight to say Hello! to the world and the Fed brood chose this fortnight to engage in synchronized night-bawling, the better to keep Papa Fed awake all through………..
Vamos Bautista Agut!

If Stan does reach the 4th rd, there’s now way Pospisil will beat him.
If it does happen to be a Fed-Nole 5-set thriller, I will be more than a happy man! Their rivalry was sorely missed in past 2 USO’s.
Gulbis losing in the 1st is a joke
always does at the U.S. Open
and just lost to De Schepper
why do you think Gulbis will win?

I’m also going for Djokovic d. Federer in the final. Surprised you have gone for Simon over Ferrer but then again you seem to get most things right. Raonic and Ferrer are my semi-finalists and I think Monfils will reach the quarters.
I root for Dimitrov, because the Federazzi was (and still is) so-ooooooo disappointed that Rafa defeated Dimitrov at the 2014 AO. They keep saying/writing that Dimitrov ALMOST beat Rafa at the AO.
Ricky picking Djokovic over Federer in the final means that at least one of them will not make the final and most likely, neither of them will. Suits me.
^^Cheers to this!
Vamos Bautista Agut!!
Agreed. I was just sizing up Fed’s draw. RBA would be the best of a sorry lot to go up against The Chosen One in the 4th round plus they’ve never met.
#NoleFam
What a pity that Tommy Robredo, who dismantled Fed at the 2013 US Open, isn’t in his half!
Djokovic at his second least successful slam on the back of his worst hard court form of the last 6-7 years. The overconfidence in djokovic on this blog is neither surprising (given historical evidence) nor unfunny.
i think you mean the overconfidence in Djokovic in the whole world
do you find that not unfunny as well?
#CheckTheOdds
I think you have to go with Novak’s record on hard courts. This is obviously his best surface. The fact that he surprisingly underperformed in the warm up tournaments, is not necessarily an indicator of how he will do at the USO. I remember when Rafa got knocked out by Dodig in Montreal and then Baghdatis in the quarterfinals at Cincy. Then he won the USO.
You can’t count on Novak at this slam.
Oh yeah, you’re right. The whole world is a tennis expert and they never get swayed by narratives, falsehoods and misinformation… oh wait
How about data and results?

Data and results showing who’s number 1, how nice yet useless. That data means nothing with regard to this argument unless you can show a direct correlation between world numbers 1’s being more likely to win a particular tournament than those ranked number 2.
I hope THAT helps.
In general, it certainly does correlate. They are worth 2000 points each don’t you know and hard court is Nole’s best surfrace, for sure, no?
Among players in the draw, Nole has had the best showing at the USO over the last four years making finals every year and winning one.
#PleaseComeAgain
#NoleFam
“Among players in the draw, Nole has had the best showing at the USO over the last four years making finals every year and winning one.”
And yet who has the most US open titles in the last 4 years? Nadal with 2. Despite not being number 1 last year or in 2011 when he made the final. Holding the number 1 spot does not correlate with winning particular grand slams, you’ve failed to produce the data to support it.
Form has to be accounted for, and Djokovic’s is way off.
No. 1 in the world and No. 1 in the Race, useless. Speaks volumes. Also the most consistent player in majors (last time I checked USO is a major) making semis or better in 16 of the last 17 majors.
Well you can lead a horse to water but you know the rest.
In general it correlates well. There are few exceptions. Simple math.
Nadal was way off on clay before the French Open this year and was not so hot prior to USO 2010. Who won both? Recent form ain’t everytihing,
Unfortunately, Nadal ain’t a factor here so move on.
Nole is way off over the last two tournaments and that is but just one of many factors to weigh.
So if you are basing it on current form alone, the favourite is obviously Punchbag and I agree he has a fantastic chance with his ridiculously easy hand picked draw.
But I, along with the betting public, feel that Nole has the better chance over two weeks best of five, just like Wimbledon even with his ridiculously difficult hand picked draw.

Novak Djokovic
Has there ever been a No. 1 player who has had to answer as many questions about another No. 1 player? It seems to be Djokovic’s fate to spend much of his career musing on the amazingness of Roger Federer. On Saturday, after answering a question about Rafael Nadal’s many injuries, Djokovic was asked this:
“How would describe Roger’s style and his durability by contrast?”
Djokovic duly noted that Federer “plays so effortless and so smooth,” but apparently that wasn’t good enough, because he received this as a follow-up:
“What do you make of [Federer’s] streak of appearing in majors, 15 years straight, 60 straight majors?”
By then, Djokovic appeared to have had enough of the subject:
“What can I say? It’s an incredible achievement. Everything he does is remarkable.”

Djokovic looked very poor against Shwartzman. Intensity dropped off multiple times and backhand still an issue like it was in Toronto and Cincy.
Only drop was in the third after up two sets surrendering three games.Righted the ship when he needed to in the third. He showed none of this intensity and consistent level of play in Toronto and Cincy.

Where the seeds (and other worthy mentionables) fell by quarter with career wins over Nole/Fed in brackets:
Nole:
Top 3: Murray, Tsonga, Isner (16/17)
Other Seeds: Kohlschrieber, Benneteau, Verdasco, (GG)Lopez
Notables: Stepanek
subStandard:
Top 3: Raonic, Nishikori, Robredo, (3/3)
Other Seeds: Youzhny, Chardy, Mayer, Rosol
Notables: Vesely, Kyrgios, Pospisil, Coric
Berdy:
Top 3: Ferrer, Cilic, Gulbis, (6/2)
Other Seeds:Simon, Anderson, Giraldo, (F)Lopez
Notables: Hewitt, Johnson, Donsky, Thiem, Janowicz
Maestro:
Dimitrov, Gasquet, Fognini (2/2)
Other Seeds: Monfils, RBA, Karlovic, Sousa
Notables: NONE
Top 3 seeded opponents ,and notables/young guns (or absence thereof) in each quarter says it all.
So shocker then that this “random” draw has top three opponents have a combined 17 wins over Nole (more than double the other 9 Top 3 seeds combined with 7).
And Top 3 seeds in Fed’s quarter have a combined two career wins, the lowest in the groups. Compare that to the Top 3 seeds neatly placed in Djokovic’s quarter who just so happen to have a whopping combined 16 wins over Fed.
Oh, and super slick courts to boot!
What are the odds.

hawkeye, why are the stands half empty even for the Americans? Was it full for Fed because they didn’t show much of the stands during his match.
No at least not for the first set. Americans aren’t big tennis fans. They’d rather watch little league baseball. Many empty seats but Ashe seats around 24,000.
An evening bill with Fed and Serena. Less than half full I’d say.

“In the heat of the moment, locked in a suddenly tight match after midnight at Flushing Meadows, Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka snapped at a rowdy spectator, telling him to “Shut up.””
Could be that’s the first English phrase they teach up there in Switzerland………….
There are more similarities! Stan’s “shut up” is handled also very softly by the Federazzi!
A video (probably the Fedrazzi is clapping)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icVtHM9VVfc
I watched that match and you couldn’t help but hear Stan shouting to the crowd to shut up! That can get you in big trouble with the New York crowd. But the ESPN commies said that there was one guy who was going after Stan repeatedly. I think the crowd actually applauded when he said it and pointed out the fan who was trashing him. They had the supervisor go over there to try and deal with it.
Late matches at the USO can be a little cray-cray. But Stan should try to keep his cool and not act the prima donna.
Kyrgios is likely going to make it to the last 16 or quarters. He has a complete cupcake of a draw. Disgustingly arrogant though.
