The National Bank Open draw ceremony was held on Friday afternoon, marking the unofficial start of back-to-back Masters 1000 tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati ultimately leading up to the U.S. Open.
With Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz having withdrawn a while ago, Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime are the top two seeds in Montreal. They are followed on the list by Alex de Minaur, Daniil Medvedev, Ben Shelton, Flavio Cobolli, Taylor Fritz, and Jiri Lehecka.
In the top half of the bracket, Shelton will begin his title defense against either Jenson Brooksby or a qualifier. The eighth-ranked American could face Joao Fonseca in the last 16 and Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals. Familiar foes Zverev and Fritz are on a collision course for the quarters after the German ended a seven-match losing streak in the head-to-head series earlier this summer at Wimbledon.
On the other side, Auger-Aliassime will kick off his campaign in front of the home crowd against either Luca Van Assche or a qualifier. Other seeded players in the Canadian’s section are Cobolli, Andrey Rublev, Frances Tiafoe, and current Washington semifinalist Brandon Nakashima. De Minaur, who lost to Nakashima on Friday, finds himself in a quarter of the draw with Lehecka, Lorenzo Musetti, and Rafael Jodar.
Among the first-round matches to watch are Tallon Griekspoor vs. Lorenzo Sonego, Alex Michelsen vs. Jan-Lennard Struff, Kamil Majchrzak vs. Gael Monfils, and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard vs. Botic van de Zandschulp.
