Ymer defaulted in Lyon for tirade at chair umpire

Mikael Ymer was defaulted out of the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Lyon following a temper tantrum late in the first set of his second-round match against Arthur Fils on Wednesday afternoon.

At 5-5, 30-30 in the first set, Ymer struck a forehand well long after a shot by Fils appeared to clip the outside of the sideline. The Swede circled the mark and asked for chair umpire Rogerio Santos to check it, but Santos refused–saying that Ymer had already miss the next shot so the point went to Fils even if the Frenchman’s previous shot had landed out.

Fils broke serve one point later, after which Ymer furiously slammed–and destroyed–his racket on the umpire’s chair. The 24-year-old was promptly defaulted as a result of his actions.

Lyon second-round results

Fils advances to face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The top-seeded Auger-Aliassime won his opening match of the tournament 7-5, 6-2 over Pablo Llamas Ruiz.

In other second-round matches, Tommy Paul beat Gregoire Barrere and will now run into fellow American Brandon Nakashime–who ousted Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(6), 1-6, 7-5. Francisco Cerundolo vs. Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie vs. Sebastian Baez are the other two quarterfinal matchups.
