There are three Grand Slam champions in the Wimbledon semifinals, owners of a combined 29 such titles.
And then there’s Arthur Fery, who is ranked No. 114 in the world and had won only six ATP-level matches in his entire career prior to this fortnight.
Fery has joined Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Alexander Zverev in the last four with a hard-to-believe run in front of the home crowd at the All-England Club. The 23-year-old Brit has done it at the expense of Damir Dzumhur, Otto Virtanen, Zizou Bergs, Grigor Dimitrov, and Flavio Cobolli. Fery was a set down against both Dzumhur and Virtanen, ousted both Bergs and Dimitrov in fifth-set tiebreakers, and then clobbered Cobolli in straight sets on Wednesday.
Zverev, of course, presents a tougher test than all of those opponents. The third-ranked German finally won the first major title of his career last month at the French Open and unsurprisingly has looked like a looser and even better version of himself in the aftermath. With “best player to have never won a slam” weight off his shoulders, Zverev has impressed in SW19 with victories over Alexander Blockx, Valentin Royer, Marcos Giron, Jiri Lehecka, and Taylor Fritz. Although some of the 29-year-old’s scorelines have not been entirely dominant, he has looked like by far the best player on the court in all five of his matches.
Of particular concern for Fery is that Zverev is serving better than he ever has in his career. As well as the underdog is returning, he is never going to have the edge over Zverev’s serve when the No. 2 seed is putting in such a high percentage of first deliveries.
Unless Zverev’s level drops dramatically out of the blue, he should power his way into a second consecutive Grand Slam final without much trouble.
Pick: Zverev in 3

WWW?
Zverev in 3, he is serving from the tree in this tournament his average first serve speed the other day was 131 mph + and average 2nd serve speed was 115mph +. He has dropped 4 service games in 5 completed matches and won 5 out of 6 Tiebreaks. Ferry should have been ousted by Dimitrov. Nonetheless he won’t get any freebies from Zverev.
ZV serving as well as I’ve ever seen…in 3.
yep
The Fery-Tale ends here agree
Zverev will win in 3. His match against Fritz showed is skill and determination. He’s always had the ability to go very far in tournaments and the recent Roland Garros triumph has given the extra edge to his confidence ensuring success.
and may have a good chance in the final, too
Well, it looks like Zverev is winning this in three; he’s got the break in the third. If Djokovic gives Sinner a good run for his money then Zverev has a chance against him; I don’t think Sinner is in peak form.
Fery has been really impressive though, especially in the first set. Tiny fella like a leprechaun and produces super tennis. Looks like we got another Vacherot type story and addition to the ATP regulars. Hopefully he won’t do a Raducanu.
Zverev with a good chance regardless
probably would be favored against Djokovic
