It will be a surprising quarterfinal contest when Flavio Cobolli and Arthur Fery collide at Wimbledon on Wednesday afternoon.
That being said, it’s probably time to consider Cobolli reaching the business end of Grand Slams as the norm. The Italian also made it this far at the All-England Club last summer (lost to Novak Djokovic) and went all the way to the French Open final last month.
On the heels of an awesome clay-court swing, it has been full steam ahead for Cobolli on grass. The world No. 10 booked his spot in the last eight this fortnight with defeats of Mariano Navone, James Duckworth, Karen Khachanov, and Alex de Minaur. Cobolli was especially impressive on Monday, when he disposed of De Minaur in straight sets.
Mentally and physically, it’s hard to see Fery having a whole lot left in the tank for the biggest match of his career. The British wild card advanced through each of the last two rounds in fifth-set tiebreakers, outlasting Zizou Bergs and Grigor Dimitrov. Fery is playing well, but the competition level has not been strong (although beating Dimitrov is a big result, the Bulgarian is an injury-plagued 35-year-old who was coming off a five-setter against Matteo Berrettini).
The revenge factor should also be taken into consideration after an ill Cobolli lost to Fery at this year’s Australian Open. The 24-year-old will be an entirely different opponent for Fery in the rematch — and he will be inspired.
There is a good chance that this match isn’t even remotely competitive.

Upset loading. Thought this shouldn’t be a tough match for Flavio but Ferry has exceeded all expectations he leads by 2 sets to love. Flavio is also upset by the vocal support Ferry is receiving, but honestly what else did he expect ? The crowd will cheer for the local boy, that was a no brainer.
