Is anything sweeter than maple syrup? When it’s helping a player win tennis matches, no.

Canada’s favorite condiment has been benefiting from free advertising by Vasek Pospisil over the past few days, starting with his appearance in the Open Sud de France final. That’s when Pospisil guzzled maple syrup during changeovers, albeit in a losing effort against Gael Monfils.

The syrup has returned at this week’s ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, and so far it has worked. Pospisil upset world No. 1 and top seed Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-3 on Wendesday.

“I love maple syrup,” Pospisil explained afterward. “I’m a huge maple syrup guy. I didn’t even realize…after the match last week I saw it blew up. Then it kind of hit me that it was actually really funny, ’cause I’m Canadian…. But I didn’t think anything of it because I use maple syrup every day. I travel with it; I use it religiously for breakfast.

“It’s really good for you. I actually did some research online (and found) that it’s quite good for endurance sports. So I thought, ‘I’ll give it a go.’ I love it, so I’ll be sticking with that for a little bit.”

Yes, it’s safe to say Pospisil is big, huge maple syrup guy. He had a big week in Motpellier and a huge win over Medvedev.

Maple syrup can only hope his run continues.
