The U.S. Open draw ceremony was held on Thursday afternoon.
Stan Wawrinka, who snagged a last-minute wild card when Patrick Kypson withdrew on Wednesday, arguably has the most interesting draw of any player in the field. Up first for the 41-year-old Swiss is a rematch with Matteo Berrettini, to whom he lost 6-7(7), 7-6(16), 7-6(7), 7-6(5) in the Wimbledon first round only two months ago. Whoever wins will likely meet none other than Novak Djokovic in round two.
They part of a stacked bottom half of the bracket, which is also home to No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz, Montreal champion Ben Shelton, and Cincinnati winner Arthur Fils. Shelton and Fils could go head-to-head in the last 16.
Alcaraz’s first singles match since April will come against Roman Safiullin, already a proven giant killer who is no stranger to making deep runs at Grand Slams. The third-ranked Spaniard, who is just now returning from a wrist injury, could run into Americans Jenson Brooksby in the second round and Tommy Paul in the fourth.
At the top of draw, Alexander Zverev’s first dangerous opponent will likely come in the form of Lorenzo Musetti (fourth round). Taylor Fritz and Rafael Jodar have favorable paths at least until the quarterfinals.
