Top 20 reasons why Anderson will beat Berdych

Kevin Anderson is 0-9 lifetime against Tomas Berdych and 4-22 in total sets. All nine losses have come in the last 25 months and Anderson has succumbed to Berdych in straight sets in two consecutive Australian Opens.

So why will it be different this time around? A brief first-week summary proves that there’s something in the water Down Under this summer. Or more like something in the heat.

20. Fabio Fognini is through to the fourth round of a hard-court Grand Slam.

19. Ernests Gulbis wore a hat (if you can call it a hat) during a tennis match….

18. …And Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wore a visor.

17. Filippo Volandri won 11 games of hard-court tennis against Tsonga, including five in one set alone.

16. Kelsey deserves it.

15. Donald Young is the last American man remaining, and he did it by winning two matches–including a five-setter over a seed (Andreas Seppi).

14. It was so hot that Frank Dancevic saw Snoopy.

13. Despite being on crutches and reported by just about everyone to have withdrawn, Gilles Simon played the Australian Open….

12. And won consecutive five-setters over Daniel Brands and Marin Cilic….

11. And saved seven match points and struck 32 aces against Brands.

10. Marinko Matosevic blamed his coach for his first-round loss to Kei Nishikori. You would think after falling to 0-12 lifetime in first-round slam matches that Matosevic may realize the problem lies within.

9. A man from Bosnia & Herzegovina, Damir Dzumhur, reached the third round. And he was serenaded by an accordion in the process.

8. Berdych does not always have the Melbourne crowd behind him.

7. Apparently Benoit Paire cares about tennis. He actually recovered from two sets and a break down to win. No matter that it came against a teenager (Nick Kyrgios).

6. Despite getting thrashed in relatively routine straight sets, Denis Istomin stole the show–and the crowd–from Novak Djokovic.

5. Andy Murray trailed Vincent Millot 5-4, 40-30 in the third set…then didn’t lose another point the entire rest of the match. Twenty-three in a row.

4. Stephane Robert is in the fourth round.

3. Roberto Bautista Agut beat someone who has more names in his name than Roberto Bautista Agut.

2. Anderson had never come back from two sets down in his entire career. He has already done it twice this Australian Open (vs. Jiri Vesely and Edouard Roger-Vasselin).

1. He won’t be able to tell it’s Berdych on the other side of the net.
