A team of tennis writers recently ranked the top 25 tennis matches through the first 25 years of the current century for The Second Serve.
I wrote up the epic 2009 Australian Open semifinal between Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco. He is an excerpt from a match that ranks No. 4 on the list:
“It just means more when you have to set your alarm for 3:30 a.m. to watch a spectacle unfold…. What unfolded was an instant classic — a five-hour and 14-minute marathon of the utmost quality that ended at 1:07 in the morning (9:07 EST!).
“What I remember most about the match was the absurdity of the baseline rallies. Even Alcaraz vs. Sinner matches would be jealous of what Nadal and Verdasco produced from the back of the court.”
Check out the entire list — in four parts — at The Second Serve:
Nos. 16-25

Amy that was exactly my point
ok Alison!! ๐๐
Anyway Happy New year to Alison and Al!!
And Ricky and everyone on the site..
Somewhat amusingly I just got back from a walk on the coast path and I passed 2 guys going on about Fed and who was the greatest!!
So I said I am a Rafa fan but obviously it’s Djokovic because he has 24 slams.
So they said yes unfortunately…! I think they were Fed fans. They were still going on and on about individual matches as I left..!! Shows how iconic the big 3 are.
Happy new year to you too Amy Al, Ricky and Grandstand posters, hope you all have a great evening https://media.tenor.com/cHXf2CRshxAAAAAM/new-year.gif
Amy funnily enough I’ve never been all that invested in GOAT debate, find all a bit self indulgent to be honest
Well even as a djokovic fan I dont get much joy from him being called GOAT. He won the most titles, but other players in their eras were just as brilliant in their own way.
Sadly, the better player can lose, its the scoring system not always because of a choke.
And Ive just set my TV to record United Cup on Sky… heres to a happy new year and new season ,everyone here.
At least we agree on something then lol, Happy new year Al ๐
At least I understood that post lol Yeah same you,
