Surprise: Federer announces he will play in Miami

Roger Federer announced on Thursday that he will play in the upcoming Miami Open. There had been speculation following Federer’s withdrawal from the BNP Paribas Open that he would not return until the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on clay.

But when the 34-year-old Swiss pulled out of Indian Wells and said he would play in Monte-Carlo, he did not specifically indicate that he would skip Miami. The door was left open, and Federer continued to drop hints on social media of his progress in recovering from a knee injury.

Federer has not played since losing in the Australian Open semifinals to Novak Djokovic. The 17-time major champion has participated in the Miami Masters only once in the last three years, losing to Kei Nishikori in the 2014 quarterfinals. Federer took to Twitter to announce his comeback, which will officially begin with a second-round match either next Friday or Saturday.

  1. Whoa!! ALLEZ!! I hope he’s in good condition now. Roger is not one to rush into action so I’m sure he’s all recovered again. Let’s go Roger!!

  2. Isn’t this sooner than expected? I guess that means that Fed had a good recovery.

It’s always good news when a great champion is able to be back in action again.

    • ^Yes, he basically said he was no child prodigy like Hingis or Nadal or Hewitt. He’s said it quite a few times. That he didn’t think he could go beyond winning a Wimbledon-maybe. His interview when he won his first major says it all.
