Sock leads undefeated United States into Hopman Cup final

Having already qualified for the Hopman Cup final, the United States completed an undefeated run through round-robin competition by beating host Australia 2-1 on Thursday. After splitting the singles matches, Jack Sock and CoCo Vandeweghe defeated Matt Ebden and Daria Gavrilova in straight sets to win the decisive mixed doubles contest.

Ebden replaced Nick Kyrgios, who has been dealing with a knee injury but suited up for a light-hearted singles affair with Sock. The American cruised 6-2, 6-2 and hit some impressive shots in the process.

“We both said going into this match we were going to have some fun,” Sock noted. “We’d already qualified for the finals. And with his knee everything, I don’t think he wanted to push it over the limit and make it worse for Melbourne.”

“It’s not terrible, but it’s not great,” Kyrgios said of his knee issue. “I just need to rest now and a couple of days without the load and I should be back to normal. A thing like this won’t take too long.”

  1. Although Switzerland lost to France, Roger played his best match of the tourney by blasting Gasquet 1 and 4. Man he was playing well. If he plays like that in Melbourne, I wouldn’t count him out. I think he’s got a real shot at taking the AO. Especially if he plays like he did in that last match against Gasquet.
