Jannik Sinner’s absence from the current North American hard-court swing could be the result of a minor knee injury. The top-ranked Italian is not playing the National Bank Open in Montreal and he is reportedly in doubt for the Cincinnati Masters.
Sinner, the reigning Wimbledon champion, has been training in Monte-Carlo but recently paid a visit to Milan to get a checkup on his knee. The 24-year-old is set for a second meeting with Dr. Gianluca Melegati, who has worked with AC Milan as well as the Italian national rugby team. That will come closer to Sinner’s scheduled departure for the United States, where he is scheduled for Cincinnati and the U.S. Open.
There are conflicting reports about Sinner’s plans for Cincinnati, but there has not been any indication from any media outlet that he is at risk of missing the season’s fourth and final Grand Slam.
Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner’s chief rival and current world No. 2, won’t be in Cincinnati after he withdrew on Tuesday because of his ongoing wrist injury. Alcaraz has not played a tournament since the Barcelona Open in April, when he took a medical timeout during a first-round win over Otto Virtanen and then withdrew prior to his next match.
“We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible,” Cincy tournament director Bob Moran stated. “We wish him the best with his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to Cincinnati in the future.”
