There will be no Masters 1000 sweep in 2026.
Having won the first five 1000-point tournaments this season, Jannik Sinner was already more than halfway home to taking all nine. However, the world No. 1 will not compete at next month’s National Bank Open. Both Sinner and Novak Djokovic withdrew from the Montreal Masters on Friday.
“After carefully considering all the factors together with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal,” Sinner stated. “It is never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritize my health. I’m disappointed not to be there, but I look forward to returning to Montreal in the future.”

The Italian triumphed earlier this year in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid, and Rome. He will likely play for the first time since lifting the Wimbledon trophy at the Cincinnati Masters, his lone warmup tournament before the U.S. Open.
Sinner is 7-3 lifetime in four trips to this event, with one title (Toronto 2023).
Djokovic has not played the National Bank Open since 2018, so his exit is no surprise. The 39-year-old Serb is 37-7 all time at this Masters 1000 tournament with four titles (2007, 2011, 2012, 2016). Djokovic has played in Cincinnati just once since 2020, so there is a good chance that he arrives in New York with no hard-court matches under his belt during the summer swing.

expected developments
Wasn’t this a once in a lifetime opportunity for Sinner to sweep all 9 Masters? But perhaps he wants to conserve energy for the US Open and avoid over playing in the leadup. He wouldn’t want a repeat of what happened to him at the French Open.
