Simon, Youzhny advance to Bangkok quarterfinals

Gilles Simon takes care of Bernard Tomic in straight sets on Thursday in Bangkok. Simon is joined in the quarterfinals by Mikhail Youzhny, a routine winner over Denis Istomin.

(4) Gilles Simon d. Bernard Tomic 6-4, 7-5

Simon maintained his fine form by defeating Tomic in one hour and 19 minutes during second-round action at the Thailand Open on Thursday afternoon. Coming off a title last week in Metz, Simon struck three aces without double-faulting and he saved both of the break points he faced. Tomic recorded six aces and no double-faults, but he was outclassed by his opponent from the back of the court.

One break was enough for Simon in each set. The 14th-ranked Frenchman, who dropped a mere four points in his last six service games, seized it at 5-5 in the second. He served out the proceedings with ease at 6-5 to set up a quarterfinal clash against Igor Sijsling.

(5) Mikhail Youzhny d. Denis Istomin 6-3, 6-3

Youzhny, a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open, continued to play stellar tennis as he dismissed Istomin in one hour and 19 minutes on Thursday in Bangkok. The fifth-seeded Russian lost only 12 points in nine service games and he did not face a single break point. Istomin saved 10 of 13 break points, but three donations of serve were three too many and he won just 32 percent of his second-serve points.

Youzhny’s third break of the day at 5-3 in the second finished off the match in style. The world No. 20 tallied two aces and no double-faults while the end of Istomin’s week featured four aces and two doubles. Next up for Youzhny is No. 2 seed Richard Gasquet, who rolled over Lukas Lacko 6-3, 6-2.
