Rotterdam R1 preview and prediction: Medvedev vs. Humbert

Daniil Medvedev

The ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament will waste no time packing a punch, as main-draw competition begins on Monday with a first-round showdown between Daniil Medvedev and Ugo Humbert.

This marks their fifth meeting, with Humbert leading the head-to-head series 3-1. The French left-hander has won two of their three hard-court encounters (all outdoors) and most recently prevailed 7-5, 6-3 in the 2024 Dubai semifinals.

Even though Medvedev is also accomplished indoors, this surface should favor Humbert to an even greater extent. Four of his seven ATP titles and two of his four runner-up finishes have come on indoor hard courts. The world No. 38 is coming off a disappointing result in Montpellier (lost in the second round to eventual finalist Adrian Mannarino), but at least that means he is well rested for Rotterdam. And it’s not like Humbert is playing poorly — he reached the final in Adelaide last month (fell to Tomas Machac in three sets).

Medvedev has already been all over the place in 2026. The 11th-ranked Frenchman kicked off his season with a title in Brisbane and showed brief signs of possibly making a deep run at the Australian Open, but he got absolutely clobbered by Learner Tien 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 in the fourth round.

Although Medvedev is a former champion of this event (2023), he is still just 6-4 in his last 10 matches in Rotterdam. Early exits from this tournament are nothing out of the ordinary for the former world No. 1, and another one could be in the cards against one of the best indoor players on tour.

Pick: Humbert in 3

  1. 50 50 to me, Humbert an awkward opponent for Med, but on the plus side for Meddy, its probably a slow gritty court .

Med in three, but I still have him going out early
