Recapping Wimbledon 2019

For more than 100 years, Wimbledon continues to be one of the most spectacular tennis tournaments in the world. The 2019 championships were unmatched in terms of competitiveness, the rivalry between players, and it was also a great platform for new talents such as Coco Gauff.

Women’s singles

For the past 10 years, Wimbledon has been full of surprises. For example, nine players have won the competition in a decade—making it one of the most open high-level competitions in the world of tennis for women. Although all the 16 players are highly competitive, four players were top notch. They include Gauff, Simona Halep, Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty, and Johanna Konta. Among the four players, Gauff is the youngest, fastest, and arguably the player to watch in the future Wimbledon women’s singles.

In the semis, the match between Williams and Barbora Strycova was an easy one for the seven-time champion. Although Strycova lost, it was the best tournament in her tennis career. Williams was listed in sportsbooks as a -390 favorite, while Strycova was the underdog at +310. On the other hand, Elina Svitolina failed to reach finals after losing to Halep—one of the best players this year.

Another important highlight at Wimbledon 2019 in women’s singles was the final. Like Wimbledon Championships in the past, the final was tense one between two of the few players that have been consistent in tennis. Although Halep has weaker serves and groundstrokes, she overpowered Williams. Pundits believe that if Williams met a more aggressive player such as Svitolina the outcome could have been different.

Men’s singles

Unlike the women’s singles, which is hugely unpredictable, the men’s Championships were a three-man show. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal were entertaining to watch in this year. The three players, together with Andy Murray, have dominated slams for the last one and a half decades.

The game—in addition to being one of the most entertaining sports in the world—has many rivalries and talking points. One of those memorable moments in 2019 Wimbledon Championships was between Nadal and Nick Kyrgios and Nadal. The two players displayed one of the most dramatic matches  in 2019. Underarm serve tactics by Kyrgios were part of the show..

The final match—Djokovic vs. Federer—was one of the most epic slam finals in the last two decades. Surprisingly, Djokovic was the favorite to most fans. In terms of betting odds found at Paddy Power he was listed at 6/4, while Federer was at 9/2. The game created a lot of talking points among the pundits because of the tiebreak at 12-12 (a new regulation at Wimbledon) and the fact that the two players were at their best almost the entire match. Djokovic eventually triumphed, once again cementing himself as one of the most successful slams winners in history.

Mixed doubles

Mixed doubles is entertaining and extremely competitive. The 2018 champions, Alexander Peya and Nicole Melichar, did not defend their title due to a Peya injury. The winners this year were the talented Latisha Chan and veteran Ivan Dogig. Although Williams and Murray did not lift the trophy, it was a thrill for most tennis fans to watch the two champions playing on the same side of the net.
