No Wimbledon bet this year between Sinner and coach Cahill

Jannik Sinner

When Jannik Sinner triumphed at Wimbledon for the first time in 2025, it was a victory in more ways than one. He had made a bet with coach Darren Cahill that Cahill would stay on the team for at least one more year if Sinner lifted the trophy at the All-England Club. The 60-year-old had previously vowed to retire from coaching at the end of last season.

True to his word, Cahill remained in Sinner’s coaching corner for the 2026 campaign and was in the box when the Italian went back-to-back at Wimbledon on Sunday. Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 after three hours and 46 minutes for the fifth Grand Slam title of his career.

Afterward, Cahill and co-coach Simone Vagnozzi had a press conference during which the Australian was asked about his future.

“No bet this year,” Cahill said with a smile.

“No. I’m here until the end of 2026 and then we’ll see. I did say I was finished at the end of 2025. I turned around and changed my mind. No, we’ll get through to the end of the year. We’ll sit down as a team and talk about what is best for Jannik.”

There will be at least one more Grand Slam appearance for the Sinner-Cahill partnership, with the U.S. Open getting underway next month. Sinner, the 2024 champion in New York, is a heavy favorite — especially with Carlos Alcaraz’s participation uncertain. Alcaraz missed both the French Open and Wimbledon due to a wrist injury that he sustained during the clay-court swing in Barcelona.
