Nadal, Federer win Monte-Carlo openers

Roger Federer loses only three games in his first match of the week in Monte-Carlo, as he eases past Radek Stepanek on Wednesday. Federer is joined in the third round by Rafael Nadal, a straight-set winner over Teymuraz Gabashvili. 

Roger Federer needed a mere 52 minutes to roll over Radek Stepanek 6-1, 6-2 during second-round action at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Wednesday afternoon. Federer won all six of the break points played during the match–four converted against Stepanek and two saved on his own serve.

Rafael Nadal joined Federer in the last 16 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Teymuraz Gabashvili. The eight-time Monte-Carlo champion trailed by a break in the first set and was a point away from going down two breaks, but Nadal recovered to beat Gabashvili in one hour and 12 minutes.

Nadal will face Andreas Seppi on Thursday, while Federer is set to meet Lukas Rosol.

Next up for Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, is Pablo Carreno Busta. The 22-year-old Spaniard, making a slow but steady transition from Futures and Challengers to the ATP Tour, upset Gael Monfils 6-3, 7-6(6).
