Jakub Mensik and Fabian Marozsan will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers when they clash in round one of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Tuesday. Mensik has won both of their previous encounters — 6-4, 7-6(2) last spring in Rome and 7-6(9), 4-6, 6-1 at the start of this season in Auckland.
It’s hard to see the tide turning given that Mensik is 15-6 this season whereas Marozsan is 8-9. Although clay may give the Hungarian a slight advantage compared to other surfaces, Mesik wields superior firepower off both wings — and certainly with his serve — such that he can hit through slow conditions.
That’s what the Czech did last year in Rome and he should do it again in Monte-Carlo.
