Monte-Carlo R1 preview and prediction: Schwartzman vs. Goffin

This is one of those matches where you can only say that someone has to win.

Combined, Diego Schwartzman and David Goffin have won only seven ATP-level matches in 2023 to go along with 13 losses. Goffin at least managed to capture a Challenger title in January, but he suffered a knee injury a couple of weeks later and has not played since the penultimate week of February. Schwartzman has been playing…but he hasn’t been winning a whole lot. The 36th-ranked Argentine’s record for the year stands at 3-8 on the main tour and 0-1 in Challengers.

The good news for Schwartzman–in addition to his opponent’s struggles–is that he is at least showing signs of life. He advanced to the second round in Indian Wells and the third round in Miami, plus he got a clay-court match under his belt this past week in Estoril.

Schwartzman should be able to take advantage of Goffin’s rust.

Pick: Schwartzman in 2
