For the first time in 2026 Carlos Alcaraz vs. Jannik Sinner is on.
The two best players and the two biggest rivals on tour will square off in the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Sunday afternoon. It will mark their 18th meeting overall, with Alcaraz leading the head-to-head series 11-6 (10-6 on the main tour). The Spaniard is 7-2 in their last nine encounters, but Sinner most recently triumphed in the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals championship match.
Most importantly, Alcaraz has won four of their five clay-court contests — including three in a row. Sinner has not prevailed on the red stuff since their 2022 Umag final. Their most memorable showdown was their last one on clay, when Alcaraz triumphed from three match points down to win a five-set thriller at the French Open last spring.
Both players are in spectacular form this season. Alcaraz (21-2 in 2026) has bounced back from a disappointing Sunshine Double with Monte-Carlo wins over Sebastian Baez, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Alexander Bublik, and Valentin Vacherot. Sinner won both Sunshine Double titles — Indian Wells and Miami — and has not slowed down in the principality. The Italian is through to the final following defeats of Tomas Machac, Ugo Humbert, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Alexander Zverev.
The surface and perhaps the motivation factor, as well, should favor Alcaraz. Sinner has won three straight Masters 1000 titles dating back to Paris last fall; Alcaraz will be craving another 1000-point trophy following his struggles in Indian Wells and Miami. With tons of clay-court points to defend, this is also one of the 22-year-old’s last chances to maintain the No. 1 ranking for at least one more week before Sinner inevitably takes over the top spot later in April.
An instant classic is hopefully in the cards, but the edge may go to Alcaraz.

I highly disagree with this prediction. Sinner has been playing at the highest level above all. Dominating to win Indian Wells and the Miami Open. We all know Sinner lost his #1 ranking in large part due to his 3 month dope ban last season. He wasn’t able to build on his lead and eventually lost it. Sinner can finally reclaim the world #1 ranking and win his first significant title on clay. Sinner has never won a significant ATP title on Clay and he is also looking to extend his Masters 1000 level win streak to 4 consecutive wins. Out of all the clay tournaments this 1 definitely suits the Italians game better than the other slower clay courts due to the elevation. Sinners serve will play a huge factor in this match if he has any chance of winning. He’s currently the best server on tour statistically thanks in part to his revamp on trying to better his serve after losing the US Open Final to his biggest rival Alcaraz. The last 2 times they have played Carlos couldn’t get a good read on Sinners serve at all. If he can maintain his serving prowess and continue the precise placement on the serves outside while maintaining a high 1st serve % this match will be on his raquet. Alcaraz will do what he does best to try and disrupt Sinners rhythm but it’s no secret Alcaraz isn’t in peak form. If Carlos has trouble with his 1st serve % Sinner will be looking to exploit him on all 2nd serve opportunities and make him pay. I do see Sinner Winning most of the baseline exchanges and he’s been using the drop shot quite well this week while working to implement this more in his game. Will all that being said I wouldn’t be surprised if Sinner took this match in straights but out of respect for Carlos let’s say Sinner in 3.
Despite all the exposition, the reality is exactly what you stated; Sinner is still missing a major clay court trophy.

It’s interesting how that was a minority opinion. (I didn’t have an opinion at all here.)
Another less discusses point is that Sinner effectively only struggled in the last few months when temperatures were excessively high. This was the case in Shanghai and the AO. He seems to be less made for excessive heat. In Monte Carlo the weather is not extreme. My bet is on for Sinner in three.
