Despite a flurry of withdrawals, the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament boasts what will surely be one of the best draws in 2021 outside of Grand Slams and Masters 1000s.
The top two seeds are Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Rounding out the eight seeded seeded players are Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Roberto Bautista Agut, David Goffin, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Stan Wawrinka.
Medvedev, the Australian Open runner-up, will get back in action with a first-round contest against Dusan Lajovic. Borna Coric is a possible opponent in the last 16, while Auger-Aliassime is the other seed in the top quarter of the draw. Auger-Aliassime has an especially tough path, starting with Kei Nishikori followed by a potential second-rounder against Alex de Minaur.
Zverev will kick off his Rotterdam campaign path against Alexander Bublik, who currently finds himself in the Singapore final. Another finalist, Bautista Agut (in Montpellier), is on a collision course with Zverev for the quarterfinals. Also in that section are Lorenzo Sonego plus Americans Reilly Opelka and Tommy Paul.
At the bottom of the draw, Tsitsipas opens with Montpellier semifinalist Egor Gerasimov. In the quarters, the sixth-ranked Greek would likely meet the winner for a first-round battle between Wawrinka and Karen Khachanov.
Rublev starts with a qualifier prior to a possible second-round showdown against Andy Murray. Also in the fourth-seeded Russian’s quarter are Goffin, Ugo Humbert, and Jan-Lennard Struff. Goffin, who is facing Bautista Agut in the Montpellier title match, will go up against Struff in the Rotterdam first round.
If the top four seeds hold to form through three rounds, semifinal matchups would be Medvedev vs. Zverev and Tsitsipas vs. Rublev.
