Medvedev, Auger-Aliassime out of Washington, D.C., Lee and Hewitt get QWCs

Daniil Medvedev

The upcoming Mubadala DC Open lost a pair of big names earlier this week, as Daniil Medvedev and Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrew from the tournament.

Still, the field remains strong. The men’s draw is expected to include Ben Shelton, Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Lorenzo Musetti, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Learner Tien, Arthur Fils, Jakub Mensik, and Rafael Jodar. Among the women’s entrants are Jessica Pegula, Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina, Marta Kostyuk, and Iva Jovic.

Tiafoe and Nick Kyrgios are playing doubles together in Washington, D.C., while Venus Williams is teaming up with Alexandra Eala.

Even the qualifying event is making news, as Jordan Lee of the USA and Australian Cruz Hewitt have been awarded wild cards. Lee and Hewitt just faced each other in the Wimbledon junior final, with the American prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The Mubadala DC Open is tennis’ only combined ATP-WTA 500-level tournament. It takes place July 25-August 2 at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center.
