It will be a battle between two players in outstanding form when Jiri Lehecka and Arthur Fils clash in the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday.
They have split their four previous encounters — including two this season — at two wins apiece. After they traded a pair of three-set victories in 2024 and 2025, both of their 2026 matches have been lopsided. Fils cruised 6-3, 6-3 in the Doha quarters before Lehecka rolled 6-2, 6-2 in the Miami semis.
Lehecka has not looked back since wrapping up the Sunshine Double with a runner-up finish to Jannik Sinner. The world No. 14 reached the third round in Monte-Carlo (lost to Alexander Bublik) and has advanced at the Caja Magica with victories over Alejandro Tabilo, Alex Michelsen, and Lorenzo Musetti.
Perhaps nobody on tour other than Sinner is playing better than Fils right now. The 25th-ranked Frenchman is 21-6 in 2026 with a title in Barcelona, a runner-up showing in Doha (lost to Carlos Alcaraz), and Madrid defeats of Ignacio Buse, Emilio Nava, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
This is the essence of a 50/50 matchup featuring two guys who are playing great and showing no sign of handing a match to an opponent in routine fashion. Anything less than a three-set thriller would be a disappointment. That being said, a slight edge may go to Lehecka given his most recent performance against Fils and his history of success in Madrid. In 2024, the Czech took out Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal on his way to the semifinals.
Pick: Lehecka in 3
