Andrey Rublev and Aleksandar Kovacevic will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they meet in the semifinals of the Mifel Tennis Open on Friday night. Their only previous encounter came earlier this season on the indoor hard courts of Montpellier, where Kovacevic prevailed 7-5, 6-4–also in the semis.
The 26-year-old American is playing the best tennis of his career right now, and he will break into the top 70 for the first time if he upsets Rublev. Kovacevic owns nine main-tour match victories in 2025 after taking out Hady Habib, Luis Carlos Alvarez, and Juan Pablo Ficovich earlier in this Los Cabos tournament.
For Rublev, the 2025 campaign has mostly been a struggle. He fell all the way down to No. 17 in the world but currently finds himself back in the top 10–right on the number. Like Kovacevic, Rublev has also enjoyed a favorable draw in Los Cabos. The Russian rolled over Alex Hernandez 6-3, 6-2 but needed two hours and 18 minutes to beat Emilio Nava 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday night.
Rublev is coming off a much tougher quarterfinal contest and Kovacevic will take additional confidence from their previous head-to-head meeting. This has the makings of an upset.
