Jannik Sinner won the biggest title of his career on Sunday afternoon, defeating Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-1 in the final of the National Bank Open. Sinner improved to 5-0 lifetime against De Minaur (and 12-1 in total sets) after breaking serve five times over the course of one hour and 29 minutes.

The 21-year-old Italian was playing in his third Masters 1000 championship match, having previously finished runner-up twice in Miami (to Hubert Hurkacz in 2021 and to Daniil Medvedev earlier this season).

Sinner twice gave back a break in the opening set as he struggled to hit through De Minaur’s defense, but when he broke to love at 5-4 it was pretty much all over. The seventh seed completely overpowered his opponent in the second on the way to a convincing victory.

The overall result in Toronto gives a rankings boost to each finalist. Sinner will climb to a career-high No. 6 in the world on Monday; De Minaur will be up to a best-ever No. 12.

Both Sinner and de Minaur now head to the Cincinnati Masters–and then the U.S. Open later this month. They are in the bottom quarter of the draw along with Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz.
