A development that has been years in the making became official earlier this week, when Lleyton Hewitt was announced as Australia’s new Davis Cup captain. Hewitt, 34, takes over from interim captain Wally Massur.
“I want to be here for the long haul,” assured the former world No. 1, who will retire as a player after the upcoming Australian Open. “I see the next five years as developing the games of these three guys (Nick Kyrgios, Thanasi Kokkinakis, and Sam Groth). We have such a rich tradition with so many great players and I want the young boys to understand the history we have.”
Hewitt is the seventh captain in Australia’s Davis Cup history. The Aussies have won it all 28 times–most recently in 2003–and reached the semifinals this year before losing at Great Britain.
Hewitt’s first tie will come in next season’s first round at home against the United States.
