Carlos Alcaraz confirmed on Thursday that his comeback to tennis from a wrist injury will begin at the U.S. Open.
“Here we go,” Alcaraz wrote on social media to go along with a brief video clip.
The 23-year-old has not played a tournament since the Barcelona Open in April, when he took a medical timeout during a first-round win over Otto Virtanen and then withdrew prior to his next match. He had previously finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Alcaraz and Holger Rune have been practicing together this week in Murcia, the Spaniard’s home city. Rune has missed this entire season after suffering a torn Achilles’ last fall in Stockholm. There have been rumors that the Dane is going to withdraw from the U.S. Open, but he has not yet confirmed his status.
Sinner’s status remains in question, as the top-ranked Italian also missed both Masters 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati. He is reportedly dealing with a knee injury and has not played since lifting the Wimbledon trophy for a second straight time.
If Sinner plays in New York, Alcaraz will be the No. 3 seed behind Sinner and Alexander Zverev.
Main-draw competition at the U.S. Open will be played August 30-September 13 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The qualifying tournament will be played August 24-27 on the National Tennis Center’s field courts, with all qualifying matches free to attend during Fan Week.
