Federer opens in Basel with win over Mannarino

Roger Federer rolls over Adrian Mannarino in straight sets on Monday in Basel. Federer is through to the second round for a date with either Denis Istomin or Horacio Zeballos.

Roger Federer started in style at the 2013 Swiss Indoors Basel, easing past Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-2 on Monday evening. Federer needed just one hour and 11 minutes to reach the second round and improve to 4-0 lifetime against Mannarino.

In eight previous sets versus the Frenchman, Federer had never dropped serve a single time while facing only four break points. As such, when he broke in the opening game of this match the first set seemed to be over. Instead, Mannarino eventually broke back for 2-2 and then held for a 3-2 lead. Federer, though, was quick to restore order with a break for 4-3. The five-time Basel champion dealt with a relatively tight 30-30 situation at 5-4 by firing two straight forehand winners to finish the set.

Mannarino did well to fight off one break point in the opening game of the second and three more in the third game. However, the world No. 62 surrendered his next two service efforts to lose the last five games of the match. Federer wrapped up the proceedings with a love hold at 5-2, clinching his first match point with a service winner.

The seventh-ranked Swiss recorded three aces and two double-faults while winning 22 of 25 first-serve points. He awaits either Denis Istomin or Horacio Zeballos for a place in the quarterfinals.
